Vintage Playing Card Patterns for Fabric & Wallpaper | Spoonflower - DesignBohemian

I’ve been working on a new collection of coordinating patterns for my Spoonflower shop, and this one has quickly become one of my favorites. It combines classic playing card symbols—hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds—with vintage plaids and a warm retro color palette of black, cream, dusty pink, rust, and muted neutrals.

The idea was to create patterns that feel playful without looking overly themed. You can definitely see the playing-card inspiration, but the small scale and vintage colors make these designs surprisingly easy to use in everyday interiors.

Playing Cards, But Make Them Vintage

Instead of the traditional bright red, black, and white associated with a deck of cards, I softened the palette with warm cream, terracotta and rust reds, dusty pinks, charcoal black, and touches of muted teal.

There are tiny repeating hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades along with coordinating hand-drawn plaids. Some of the patterns are very simple and graphic, while others combine several card suits together.

Because the designs share the same colors, they can easily be mixed together.

A tiny heart print can sit beside a plaid. Black clubs can work with rust diamonds. A busier playing-card print can be paired with one of the simple small-scale patterns.

Made for Mixing and Matching

One of the things I love most about creating collections for Spoonflower is imagining how the designs could actually live together in a room.

I can picture these patterns used for:

  • Wallpaper in a cozy office, bedroom, game room, or reading nook
  • Upholstered accent chairs and ottomans
  • Curtains and Roman shades
  • Throw pillows and cushions
  • Bedding and quilts
  • Table linens
  • Fabric-covered lampshades
  • Bags and sewing projects
  • Vintage-inspired clothing and accessories

The little suit patterns are especially fun because from across the room they almost read like a tiny geometric print. When you get closer, you realize they’re hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds.

A Cozy Card-Parlor Look

I especially love these designs in interiors with dark wood, brass, vintage artwork, books, velvet, linen, and antique-inspired furniture.

Imagine cream wallpaper covered in tiny black clubs behind a linen bed, paired with rust heart pillows and a dusty pink plaid blanket.

Or a club-print upholstered chair with a coordinating plaid pillow and a tiny rust heart lumbar cushion.

The patterns can lean English cottage, dark academia, retro, traditional, or even slightly whimsical, depending on what you pair them with.

And yes, I would absolutely cover an entire little reading chair in tiny playing-card clubs. 😄

Small-Scale Patterns for Fabric and Wallpaper

I’ve also been creating several of the motifs at smaller scales. I really like tiny repeats for upholstery, quilting and clothing because they give you the theme without overwhelming the finished piece.

The collection currently includes variations of rust hearts, black spades, cream and black clubs, rust diamonds, mixed playing-card suits, and coordinating vintage plaids, with more colorways planned.

I’m also experimenting with some additional colors—deep forest green, olive, mustard, burgundy, dusty blue and chocolate brown—which should mix beautifully with the original rust, pink, black and cream palette.

All of these designs are available in my Spoonflower shop, where they can be ordered as fabric, wallpaper, and select home décor products.

If you love vintage card games, retro interiors, quirky little geometrics, dark academia, or just patterns that are a little different from the usual florals, I think you’ll have fun with this collection.

I’m still adding coordinating designs, so the collection will continue to grow.
